Storage Units Harrogate, Ripon and North Yorkshire
David Dale has provided climate-controlled storage across Harrogate, Ripon, Boroughbridge, and Knaresborough since 1976. Our units at Dale House, Forest Moor Road, Knaresborough range from 25 to 300 sq ft on flexible terms, whether that is short-term during a move, medium-term for a renovation or chain break, or longer-term for an overseas posting or business stock. As a BAR member (number D040), we manage the survey, packing, transport, and storage under one coordinator, so nothing falls between two separate contracts.

Storage in Harrogate
Harrogate is one of our busiest collection areas. Most enquiries come from homeowners bridging a chain gap, downsizers clearing space before a sale, or families in the middle of a phased move. Because we run a regular removals service across the Harrogate district, we can collect from your address, load your belongings with export-grade wrapping and double-walled boxes, and transfer them straight to our Knaresborough facility on Forest Moor Road, around four miles from Harrogate town centre.
If your Harrogate move includes a European leg to Spain, France, or Portugal, the same facility holds the UK side while your overseas completion date is confirmed. One coordinator, one contract.

Ripon is around eight miles north of our Knaresborough depot, which keeps collection straightforward for residents across HG4 and the surrounding villages. We regularly help Ripon households store during probate clearances, pre-sale declutters, and longer renovations where the property is temporarily uninhabitable.
Worth knowing if you are searching for self storage in Ripon: our service is not a self-access container site. You book a collection, our trained permanent staff handle the loading, and your belongings are held in a monitored, climate-controlled unit, with access arranged through your coordinator.

Our Boroughbridge office covers the A1 corridor and the villages east of Ripon. For customers in Boroughbridge, Skelton-on-Ure, Roecliffe, and the surrounding postcodes, we arrange collection direct from your address.

What We Offer
- Household storage, for families moving house, downsizing, or bridging a chain break. We collect, wrap, and load your belongings, and the same crew and vehicle that handles the removal manages the storage intake.
- Business storage, for office relocations, seasonal stock, trade tools, and physical archives. Units from 25 to 300 sq ft take anything from a filing run to a full office clearance.
- Storage during a move, where your belongings go into our Knaresborough facility between collection from your current property and delivery to the new one, managed as a single job.
- European storage, for relocations to Spain, France, or Portugal on our weekly UK to Spain to UK service, where we can also hold goods at our Almoradi depot in southern Spain. See our European removals and storage in Spain.

What fits in each unit size
Small units, 25 to 50 sq ft:
- A 5 x 5 ft (25 sq ft) unit works like a secure garden shed or a spare wardrobe. It suits seasonal items and decorations, student belongings over the summer, hobby gear such as bikes, golf clubs and camping kit, or the contents of a spare room cleared before estate agent photos.
- A 5 x 10 ft (50 sq ft) unit holds a small one-bedroom flat or a large studio: a double bed stored on its side, a small sofa, a chest of drawers, and 80 to 100 boxes.
Medium units, 100 to 150 sq ft:
- A 10 x 10 ft (100 sq ft) unit is the common choice for house movers, about the size of a single garage, and suits a two-bedroom home: a two-seater sofa and armchair, a dining table and four chairs, two double beds, a fridge-freezer, and a washing machine. It also suits small businesses storing seasonal stock or tools.
- A 10 x 15 ft (150 sq ft) unit holds a three-bedroom house without stacking furniture too high, with room for bulky items such as a piano or a corner sofa.
Large units, 200 to 300 sq ft:
- A 10 x 20 ft (200 sq ft) unit takes the full contents of a large family home, including white goods and the contents of a garage and loft. It is often used to store a classic car or a small boat over winter.
- A 10 x 30 ft (300 sq ft) unit is our largest standard size, equal to a full removal lorry, used for 5+ bedroom homes, bulk business stock or archives, and major whole-house renovations.
Climate control and special storage
Not everything reacts well to a standard unit. In North Yorkshire, where humidity and temperature shift through the year, it is worth thinking about what you are storing. You are more likely to need climate-controlled storage for:
- Wooden furniture, which can warp or crack with big temperature swings
- Electronics, where condensation can damage internal components
- Textiles and antiques, where natural fibres can develop mould if airflow is poor
- Paper and photographs, which need a stable environment for long-term archives
Our warehouse storage keeps a consistent environment, so an antique table or a box of business records comes out in the same condition it went in.

Common mistakes to avoid when choosing a unit
In almost 50 years we have seen the same few mistakes. Avoiding them saves money and stress.
- Renting too small. Squeezing everything into a smaller unit backfires when you have to unstack ten boxes to reach one item. Leave around 10% of the unit clear for a walkway.
- Forgetting vertical space. You pay for the height as well as the floor, so use sturdy, uniform boxes that stack safely, with heavy items such as books at the bottom.
- Ignoring airflow. Do not push furniture flat against the walls. A small gap lets air circulate and helps prevent damp and musty smells.
