Small Removals to Spain: What Counts as a Small Move?

Small removals to Spain cover anything from a single room of furniture to a part load from a two-bedroom flat, shipments that do not fill a dedicated vehicle but still need a professional mover to handle the customs paperwork, careful handling, and safe delivery to a Spanish address. David Dale has run UK to Spain removals for over 40 years and carries small moves as consolidated loads on its weekly UK to Spain service, around 50 weeks of the year, so your belongings travel with an operator that runs both ends rather than a broker arranging a one-off.

This guide explains what counts as a small move, how consolidation works, what shapes the cost, and how a small removal differs from a parcel courier.

Member of the British Association of Removers (BAR). All work fully insured. A numbered inventory on every move. Our own depot in Almoradi, so the Spanish end is ours, not a local agent’s.

What Counts as a Small Removal to Spain?

There is no industry-standard definition, but in practice a small removal to Spain is any shipment below the volume that would justify a dedicated vehicle. The rough dividing lines look like this.

Move sizeRough volumeTypical contents
A few items or one roomUnder 15 cu mSome boxes, a sofa, a bed, personal effects
Studio or one-bed flat15 to 30 cu mThe contents of a small flat, nothing large left over
Two-bed flat or small house30 to 50 cu mThe upper edge of a small or part-load move
Larger than this50 cu m and aboveUsually a dedicated vehicle, quoted as a full move

The category matters for two reasons. First, cost: a consolidated load shares vehicle space with other shipments, which brings the price well below a dedicated truck. Second, timing: your delivery date follows the consolidated run schedule rather than a date you pick, so flexibility helps.

A Small Removal Is Not a Parcel Courier

It is worth being clear on the difference, because the two are priced and handled very differently. A removal, however small, includes:

  • A survey of your items, in person or by video, before you get a price
  • Trained, permanent crews handling the load rather than a parcel network
  • Goods-in-transit cover for the whole journey
  • Customs documentation and Transfer of Residence paperwork
  • Delivery into the room of your choice, not left at the door

A courier handles boxes. A small removal handles furniture, appliances, and the full contents of a room or flat, the things a standard parcel network cannot take.

How Consolidation (Part Loads) Works

For anything that does not fill a vehicle, consolidated loading is the standard approach. Your items are collected, loaded alongside other customers’ part loads heading to Spain on the same weekly run, and delivered once the vehicle reaches your area. You pay for the space your goods take up, not for an empty truck.

David Dale runs this service around 50 weeks of the year across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, with the Almoradi depot in the Alicante region acting as the Spanish hub. Consolidation suits you when your volume is under about 50 cubic metres, you can be flexible on the delivery window by a few days, and you want a fixed price based on your actual volume. It is less suited to time-critical moves with a contractually fixed delivery day, or very large volumes where a dedicated vehicle makes more sense. For the full mechanics, see our guide to part load removals to Europe.

What Affects the Cost of a Small Removal to Spain

Even on a small move, a few things move the price.

  • Volume. The cubic metres you need is the main driver. Measuring your items beats estimating by room count.
  • Access at both ends. A ground-floor collection and a ground-floor delivery are straightforward. Narrow lanes, no vehicle access, or upper floors without a lift add handling time.
  • Packing. A full packing service with export wrapping for fragile items is quoted separately, with fragiles-only packing as a middle option.
  • Storage. If your Spanish property is not ready, your goods can wait in our own secure storage in North Yorkshire, or on the Spanish side at our Almoradi depot.
  • Customs. A UK to Spain move needs a Transfer of Residence application, covered in the next section.
  • Specialist items. Antiques, artwork, pianos, or a car or motorbike alongside your goods are quoted separately.

Customs and Transfer of Residence Relief

Since Brexit, a move from the UK to Spain is a customs import, but most people relocating their main home pay no duty or VAT thanks to Transfer of Residence relief. It lets you bring used household goods into Spain free of import charges when you meet the conditions, broadly that you are moving your main residence to Spain and have owned and used the goods for at least six months.

Spain asks for supporting paperwork, such as a change-of-residence certificate from the Spanish consulate, and it needs to be arranged before your goods arrive. Getting it wrong can hold up delivery or trigger a duty bill. Your David Dale coordinator prepares the documentation and works with the destination customs agent as part of the service, so you are not organising it alone.

FAQs

The cost depends on your volume, access at both ends, and whether you need packing or storage. A single-room or studio part load is far less than a full-house move. David Dale quotes on a fixed-price basis after a survey, so you have a confirmed figure before the vehicle arrives rather than an estimate that changes on collection day.

On our weekly UK to Spain service, transit from a UK collection to delivery in mainland Spain is typically one to two weeks for a consolidated load. The exact window depends on the consolidation schedule and your delivery area in Spain, and your coordinator confirms it once your collection is booked.

There is no fixed minimum. We move single items such as a piano, a few pieces of furniture, or the contents of one room as part loads. If your goods need proper removals handling and protection rather than a parcel courier, a part load is usually the right fit whatever the size.

No. Transfer of Residence relief removes import duty and VAT on used household goods when you move your main home to Spain. David Dale handles the application as part of the move. You provide documents confirming your change of residence, and your coordinator walks you through exactly what is needed when you book.

Yes. Car and bike transportation is available as an add-on to a household removal. Mention it when you request your quote so the coordinator includes it in the survey, and the vehicle travels on the same weekly service as your goods where scheduling allows.
