UK to Spain Moving Statistics: Where Brits Move, Costs and Trends
David Dale has operated a weekly UK to Spain service since 1976, almost 50 years on this corridor, and our depot in Almoradi, Alicante sits in the province where the majority of British residents in Spain are concentrated. Around 300,000 UK nationals are registered as residents in Spain, with annual net migration figures consistently placing it above France, Australia and Germany as the preferred long-term destination. This post sets out the key UK to Spain moving statistics: where Brits actually settle, how costs break down, and what the data shows about longer-term trends.
Where do Brits move in Spain?
The distribution of UK nationals across Spain is not even. Certain provinces account for the large majority of British residents, driven by climate, property prices and established expat communities.
| Province / Region | Estimated UK Residents | Why Brits choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Alicante (Costa Blanca) | 60,000+ | Year-round sunshine, established English-speaking services, property from £80,000 |
| Malaga (Costa del Sol) | 55,000+ | International airport, strong rental market, Marbella and Nerja appeal |
| Tenerife and Gran Canaria | 25,000+ | Canary Islands climate, no winter, strong British community infrastructure |
| Balearic Islands | 20,000+ | Mallorca for longer stays, Ibiza for shorter, year-round residency growing |
| Barcelona (Catalonia) | 15,000+ | City lifestyle, business relocation, younger demographic |
| Valencia city | 8,000+ | Lower cost than Barcelona, growing digital nomad and retiree mix |
Alicante province, including towns such as Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Almoradi, consistently holds the largest share of British residents of any province in the country. Our depot sits in Almoradi, which places the team directly within the region where the majority of customers settle. If Spain is your destination, see our removals to Spain service.

UK to Spain moving trends since 2016
The past decade brought three big disruptions to the UK to Spain corridor: Brexit, the pandemic, and a sustained rise in Spanish property prices.
2016 to 2019, the pre-Brexit surge. The period after the 2016 referendum saw a short-term spike in applications for Spanish residency as UK nationals moved to secure EU rights before the withdrawal deadline. Many accelerated planned moves by 12 to 24 months.
2020 to 2021, the pandemic pause. International moves dropped sharply and the UK to Spain route was no exception. Families mid-process deferred moves by 6 to 18 months, and storage demand in both the UK and Spain rose as a direct result.
2021 to 2022, post-Brexit adjustment. The end of freedom of movement changed the process. UK nationals now need a Non-Lucrative Visa or Digital Nomad Visa to take up residency without employment, so the mix shifted towards planned, long-term moves by retirees and remote workers with the paperwork in order.
2023 to 2025, sustained demand and rising costs. Annual figures stabilised while Spanish property prices kept appreciating, especially in Alicante and Malaga. Buyers faced higher purchase prices and a tighter rental market, which strengthened the case for buying rather than renting on arrival.
How much does a UK to Spain move cost?
Cost varies with volume, origin and service level, so every move is assessed individually. The figures below are indicative market ranges rather than quotes.
| Move type | Typical volume | Indicative price range |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 bedroom flat, part load | 15 to 30 cubic metres | £1,800 to £3,500 |
| 3 to 4 bedroom house, full load | 40 to 60 cubic metres | £4,500 to £7,500 |
| Large 5+ bedroom property | 70 to 100 cubic metres | £8,000 to £14,000 |
| Car or motorbike transport, with household | Per vehicle | £400 to £900 |
| Full packing service, export-grade materials | Per job | £500 to £2,000 additional |
Factors that move the price up or down include access at both ends, the need for customs documentation, whether storage is required in Spain before delivery, and the destination province. Because David Dale runs a weekly UK to Spain service around 50 weeks a year, part loads can share vehicle space rather than paying for a sole-use lorry, which usually brings the cost down for a 1 to 3 bedroom move. Why Brits move to Spain
Surveys of British residents in Spain point to the same drivers. Climate is cited by over 70% as a primary reason. Cost of living, particularly housing costs relative to the south-east of England, is the second most common reason, cited by roughly half. Quality of life, including pace, outdoor space and safety, ranks third.
Retirement remains the single largest category of mover. The average age of a UK national registering for Spanish residency is in the mid-50s, though this has been edging younger since 2021 as remote work normalises long-distance relocation. Retirees cluster in Alicante and the Canary Islands, while younger movers and remote workers lean towards Valencia, Barcelona and Seville.
What changes after the move
The statistics only tell part of the story. A UK to Spain relocation involves several steps that affect timing and cost.
- Empadronamiento (local registration) is required within 30 days of arrival. Without it, access to public services is restricted.
- NIE number (foreigner identification number) is needed before buying property, opening a bank account or signing a rental contract. Apply via the Spanish consulate in the UK before departure where possible.
- Driving licence exchange. You can drive on a UK licence for up to 6 months, then you must exchange it for a Spanish licence under the UK and Spain agreement.
- Customs documentation. Household goods moved as a permanent relocation qualify for duty-free import under Spain’s transfer-of-residence rules, but the paperwork must be in order before the truck crosses the border. As a BAR-registered firm (David Dale holds BAR number D040), we handle this documentation as part of the service.
- Tax residency. Spending more than 183 days in Spain in a calendar year triggers Spanish tax residency, so take independent tax advice before completing a move.
- Property purchase timeline. Completions in Spain typically take 3 to 6 months from offer to key handover, so most customers book once the escritura date is confirmed.
Common mistakes British movers make
- Booking too late. Weekly departures fill 6 to 8 weeks ahead for peak summer, so confirming a date early protects your preferred week.
- Underestimating volume. A three-bedroom house rarely fits a part-load slot, and a pre-move survey removes the guesswork.
- Forgetting to set aside funds for storage. Completion delays are common in Spain, so a plan for storage on either side protects furniture and avoids a rushed rebooking. Our European storage in Spain covers this.
- Assuming a domestic packing standard applies. A 1,200-mile road journey with a border crossing puts more stress on your belongings, so export-grade packing is the baseline, not an extra.
- Leaving pets out of the plan. Pet paperwork has its own processing times and often catches movers out.

Frequently asked questions
Registration data from Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) shows between 8,000 and 12,000 new UK national registrations per year in recent years, excluding short-stay and undeclared relocations. The true figure of people physically relocating is likely higher, as not all new arrivals register within the same calendar year.
With David Dale’s weekly service, transit from collection in North Yorkshire to delivery in Alicante province is typically 5 to 8 days door to door. Destinations further away, such as Barcelona or Galicia, add a day or two. Customs clearance for a straightforward household goods declaration is included in that timeline.
For any move over roughly 20 cubic metres, a pre-move survey is strongly recommended. It confirms the volume, flags access issues at both ends, and lets us issue a fixed-price quote rather than an estimate that changes on the day.
For high-value or sentimental items such as antiques and quality furniture, replacing them in Spain at equivalent quality usually costs more than moving them. For flat-pack or low-value pieces, selling up and buying locally often makes more sense. Our coordinators can talk this through during the survey.
Yes. Since 2021, UK nationals need a visa to live in Spain for more than 90 days in any 180-day period. The common routes are the Non-Lucrative Visa for people with independent income and the Digital Nomad Visa for remote workers.
