Moving house is a big, onerous task. Even if you're not moving abroad to somewhere like France or Spain you will be packing up almost everything that defines your day to day life - from pots and pans to bedding to toys to plant pots and more.

Perhaps one of the biggest (and certainly most arduous tasks) is packing. If you're going to get this done it's important to make sure that you're doing it well in advance of your move. You don't need to pack everything in advance - where would you be if you couldn't use your kettle - but a lot of stuff can be done weeks in advance, making your moving day that bit easier.

Sort out your clutter

Decluttering ahead of a move - particularly in the current climate where selling your house may take several months - is a great way to create a feeling of space in your house to impress potential buyers. Make a priority list a couple of weeks in advance, and use the opportunity to poke around every corner of your house. Drinks and snacks and a few plates and cups to go with them are a must - even if you're planning on finding a local eaterie to save time. Overnight clothing and things such as toothbrushes and toilet paper should also be high on your priority list for practical reasons - especially if your journey is a long one.

Another thing to bear in mind are the tools you might need to reassemble any furniture at the other end of your move. Allen keys, screwdrivers and wrenches should all be easily accessible if you want somewhere to sleep on your first night.
