Moving house can be an exciting time for children, but it can be a worrying one too. Leaving behind favourite places and friends is hard for everyone and very young children might not understand that all their toys and other possessions are only temporarily being packed away. To minimise stress for your children you should involve them as early as possible in the move and make it an enjoyable, exciting experience. If you look forward to your new home your kids will too!
Tell your children all about your new home, the area and if they're old enough, their new school and all the clubs they can join. Let them choose their bedrooms and decide how they want them decorated (within reason!).
When it comes time to pack, let them help by packing their own box. This could be all their favourite toys or the bag they're going to take with them in the car. Ask them what they just can't live without! This will give your children something to do on moving day and help them to feel involved.
If you have very young or excitable children you might just want to arrange childcare for the day. This can make moving a fun surprise - when they next see you everything will be new - but let them say goodbye to their old home. Be aware that sometimes you may get behind schedule, so make any timetable rough and allow for hold-ups. Make sure your babysitter is willing to have the children for a few extra hours if they have to!
If you are taking the children with you in the car be sure to pack some games and activities to keep them amused. Even if you're feeling a bit stressed - if you've got a long drive or it's been a long day - try to stay positive about the new house. Your feelings rub off on your children so bear in mind this is actually an exciting time for the whole family!
When you get to your new home let your children unpack their own toys straight away. They'll get a sense of achievement, customise their new bedrooms and won't feel left out. It will also give them something to do while you sort out other important things (like putting the kettle on!)
